Beehive – A great Symbol of Freemasonry

The symbolism of the beehive in Masonry is multi-faceted and rich in historical significance. The beehive is an emblem of industry, and recommends the practice of that virtue to all created beings, from the highest seraph in the heavens, to the lowest reptile of the dust. It teaches us, that as we come into the world rational and intelligent beings, so we should ever be industrious ones; never sitting down contented while our fellow-creatures around us are in want, especially when it is in our power to relieve them, without inconvenience to ourselves.

In Freemasonry

In Freemasonry, the beehive represents work, diligence and cooperation. It is emblematic of the Masonic lodge and the industriousness of Freemasons, symbolizing the idea that members should work together harmoniously for the betterment of society.

The beehive’s association with navel stones and the sacred feminine is also deeply symbolic. Omphalos stones, known as the “navel of the world”, are considered the central point from which life on earth originated and are believed to allow direct communication with GOD. The association of the beehive with these stones can be seen as a representation of the abode as the center of the world, a place of spiritual communication and enlightenment.

Furthermore, the relationship of the beehive to the sacred feminine is evident in its structure and function within nature. The beehive is dedicated to the queen bee, who resides within its dark recesses and is cared for by the worker bees. This natural order within the beehive reflects the worship of the sacred feminine, emphasizing qualities such as nurturing, creating and sustaining life.

In Masonic symbolism

In Masonic symbolism, the beehive, navel stones and the sacred feminine come together to convey messages of unity, creation and the importance of each individual’s contribution to the collective whole. These symbols serve as reminders of the virtues that Freemasons strive to embody, including industry, cooperation and commitment to the public good.
